Look out salad... half of your dressing is going down the sink...

Vinegar removes mildew, stains, and wax buildup. Use it to clean coffeepots, glass, paintbrushes, grout, windows and fireplaces. A straight 5 percent solution of vinegar—such as you can buy in the supermarket—kills 99 percent of bacteria, 82 percent of mold, and 80 percent of germs (viruses).

  • Vinegar is very useful in the home for cleaning mould and areas where bacteria can grow
  • Floor cleaner. Mix 1 cup white vinegar with 2 gallons hot water.
  • Deodorize the kitchen drain. Pour a cup down the drain once a week. Let stand 30 minutes and then flush with cold water. Another idea that I love to use is to pour a half cup of baking soda down each drain, then a cup of vinegar over top. I leave it sit for a half hour, then flush it with boiling water. This may help unclog a drain as well.
  • Clean and disinfect wood cutting boards. Wipe with full-strength vinegar.
  • Cut grease and odour on dishes. Add a tablespoon of vinegar to hot soapy water.
  • Clean a teapot. Boil a mixture of water and vinegar in the teapot. Wipe away the grime.
  • Clean the refrigerator. Wash with a solution of equal parts water and vinegar.
  • Clean and deodorize jars. Rinse mayonnaise, peanut butter, and mustard jars with vinegar when empty.
  • Clean the dishwasher. Run a cup of vinegar through the whole cycle once a month to reduce soap build-up on the inner mechanisms and on glassware.
  • Clean stainless steel. Wipe with a vinegar-dampened cloth
  • Remove stains from pots. Fill the pot with a solution of 3 tablespoons of vinegar to a pint of water. Boil until the stain loosens and can be washed away.
  • Clean the microwave. Boil a solution of 1/4 cup vinegar and 1 cup of water in the microwave. This will loosen food particles from microwave walls and deodorize it at the same time. If you do not like the smell, follow this up with a mixture of vanilla in water, it will smell as if you have been baking.
  • Remove lint from your clothes. Add 1/2 cup of vinegar to the rinse cycle of the wash. This also helps to brighten fabric colours.
  • Vinegar in the washing machine. Pour 1 cup of vinegar in the machine and let it run through a regular cycle (no clothes added). This will help dissolve soap residue.
  • Remove tough stains. Gently rub vinegar on the stains before placing in the wash.
  • Remove decals. Brush with a couple of coats of vinegar and allow it to soak in before washing them off.
  • Clean eyeglasses (or any glass for that matter). Wipe each lens with a drop of vinegar.
  • Window Cleaner. My favourite recipe is to combine 2 cups of water, 1/4 cup of white distilled vinegar, and up to 1/2 teaspoon of liquid dish soap in a spray bottle, shake it up well and use it for your windows and mirrors. The liquid dish soap cuts the grease.
  • Poison Ivy Killer. Spray straight 5 percent white distilled household vinegar on poison ivy. It will also kill grass and weeds between sidewalk blocks, or in unwanted areas.
  • Cutting Board Deodorizer. Spray straight 5 percent white distilled household vinegar on the cutting board. Let it set for at least ½ an hour then rinse.
  • Wood Cleaning Rinse. After washing wooden floors, add 1 cup of vinegar to a gallon of water to the rinse water. The detergent or soap, and many odours, are neutralized by the vinegar, and the floors are left very clean. Be VERY careful to only DAMP wipe the floor so as not to warp the wood.
